Annual Unofficial LT100 Night Run 2013 at Fuller's House - Fish Hatchery - May Queen

August 3, 2013 at 6pm to August 4, 2013 at 1am
This has become an annual tradition and I am pleased to host once again for 2013!2 weeks before the running of the LT100, a group of runners will meet at my house for a little pre-party.  Then we will caravan out 4 miles to Fish Hatchery where we will begin the run.  We will cover the last miles of the course in the dark to get people familiar with how its done on race day.  The sun usually sets by the time we are to the top of Powerline.  We usually stop along the way at various points to…See More

"Thanks for hosting again this year.  Will the caravan to Fish begin around 7:30?  I think that's when we left last year.  I won't be able to get to your place until about 7pm."

"Nice!  I tagged along with everyone on the night run last year, so I'm pleased to be running it this year as an actual LT100 runner.  It would be great if you could coordinate holding off that frigid rain we encountered last time.…"

"Good stuff Brandon.  I used a similar setup with my 305 when I ran a 100k in January.  Around the 9 hour mark, I took my 305 off, popped it in the cradle, attached the portable power charger, and then strapped it to my hydration vest.…"

"Good stuff Clyde.  Thanks.  I run at night with a handheld light strapped to the back of my hand.  I love this setup since it still allows my fingers freedom, but holds the light at the perfect level for running.  I totally agree…"

Clyde Weller replied to Woody Anderson's discussion How important are night training runs?
"I only did a couple of night-time runs before my Pb finish, but your biggest risk is the physical exhaustion and the hazards that result from darkness – not sleep deprivation.  Specifically, slips, trips and falls.  Your night vision…"

"I think doing 3-4 of the runs you described between now and race day would be good (though not 6 hours, more like 2-4, not enough to really take away from your other training).  Plus it's a nice change to the routine to just head out and…"

"Brandon - I was on that night run with you up in Pb last August.  I really enjoyed the run (despite the cold rain) until about midnight.  Then I fought hard the urge to sleep for the last 1.5 hours.  The total darkness on the…"

"Woody, seems a bit much there.  I'd say 3-4 night runs tops should be just fine.  You've run the dark portion before so you know what's out there."

"Everyone is probably different so hopefully folks will give you a few different opinions. Finished my first LT100 in 2010. I never concentrated on the night runs.  Never even worried about it really.  I did a single training run at night…"

How important are night training runs?

Getting ready for my first Pb.  I'm not a night person at all and am probably most nervous about running through the night when my body is craving sleep.  To that end, I'm starting to kick around the idea of adding 1-2 long night runs to my training each month til August.  In the ballpark of 3-6 hours starting around 9-10pm. Is this wise?  Stupid?  Am I just setting myself up to be overly tired for other training runs?  Will my body just rise to the occasion on race day (night) and power…See More
