A resource for runners who like to suffer.
Permalink Reply by Brandon Fuller on June 28, 2012 at 11:51am Lots of people are and do. Its only getting more popular. I just finished the WS100 and ran 45 miles in them. Felt like putting pillows on my feet mid-race. I hated them in training though...
Permalink Reply by Jay Aldous on July 2, 2012 at 9:10am My understanding is that the sizing is unisex. I was able to find a women's size 9 that fits me well (I'm a men's size 8). If your foot isn't too large this may be a solution to the limited availability. Only problem is the baby blue color is pretty pathetic. I'm always looking for some mud to step in to help hide the shame...
I picked up a pair of Stinson Evos about 1 month ago from Boulder Running Co. All I can say is they are AWESOME!!!! I've done a couple of long training runs (24 miles each in the mountains) with them. A week ago I did a double-crossing of Hope Pass in them (although I will probably use a different shoe during the actual race for that section only). Then this last Saturday I ran in the Leadville Marathon in them. On the descents I FLEW. FLEW!!!!!!! I don't know if you've ever seen Kilian Jornet run but I literally felt like KJ hopping over technical rocky trail late into the race and my feet felt completely fine.
For the 100 race I plan to wear them the entire way except for the double-crossing of Hope Pass. These shoes are perfect for the road/trail course that is the LT100.
Disclaimers: I am 40 years old and before these shoes I ran in Asics Nimbus on roads and Asics Trail Sensors on trails. I've been ultrarunning (and running at all) for only the last 2 years. I normally wear a 10.5 but I opted for size 11 for the extra toe room.
I have the Stinson Evo trail shoes and have nothing but good things to say about them. I got my first pair on May 8 and as of yesterday I had put 538 miles on them. I do plan to get another pair to wear for the LT100 and I intend to wear them exclusively (the model if not the exact pair of shoes) throughout the entire race next month. They are hard to find so I had to order my second pair from a joint in VT. Ran the SJS 50 in them too and again, zero complaints.
